Preparing for your Toronto family and newborn photoshoot with Jess GC photography
6 tips on how to prepare for a family shoot with a baby or newborn
1. A full baby is a happy baby
A well-fed and comfortable baby is key to a successful session. Try to feed your little one right before we start. A calm, satisfied baby is much more likely to be cooperative during the shoot, and we want to capture those peaceful, serene moments.
Don’t worry if baby needs to eat during the session, though! We can always take feeding breaks as needed to keep your baby happy and content
2. Bring extra clothing for everyone (just in case!)
We've all been there. Babies are known for their timely "accidents", whether it’s a spit-up or a diaper situation! To be prepared, I recommend bringing a spare set of clothes for everyone, but especially for your baby. You never know when a quick outfit change might be needed, and this ensures you’re ready for anything
3. Personal items that matter
Your baby's first year and newborn weeks is such a special time, and sometimes the little things make it even more memorable. If you have any meaningful items, like a favourite blanket, stuffed animal, or family heirloom, feel free to bring them to the session! These personal touches can be beautifully incorporated into your photos and help tell your unique story.
4. For baby’s comfort: favourite toys or soothers
It’s always helpful to have a few comfort items on hand. Whether it’s a favourite pacifier, a beloved toy, or a soft blanket, having these items nearby will help soothe your baby and keep them calm and content during the shoot.
5. Taking breaks: go with the flow
Our newborn and family sessions are relaxed and flexible. Babies often need a little extra time to settle or adjust, and that’s totally normal! We’ll go with the flow, take breaks when necessary (for feeding, changing, or cuddles), and work at your baby’s pace. There’s no rush, and I’ll guide you through every step of the process.
6. Don’t forget the essentials!
It’s always good to be prepared, so don’t forget the essentials for your baby: diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, and any other items you might need to keep them comfortable. Having these things on hand ensures that we can keep the session flowing smoothly.
I hope these tips help you feel fully prepared for your family photo session and newborn photoshoot! It’s such a beautiful time in your life, and I’m honoured to capture these memories for you.
If you have any questions or concerns before the session, don’t hesitate to reach out. I can’t wait to meet you and your sweet baby!
