How Toronto Moms Can Prepare for their Newborn Baby
Top 5 tips on ways Toronto moms can prepare for baby's arrival
For all the moms getting ready for a new addition to the family: this whole “getting ready for baby” thing goes by faster than we ever expect!
As a mom of two, I’ve learned a thing or two about what really matters when preparing for baby. There’s a ton of advice out there, but I’m here to share the stuff that’s going to actually make life easier when you’re in the thick of those early days.
Whether you’re nesting for the first time or juggling multiple little ones, here are my top 5 tips for getting ready for baby before they are here.
1. Organize baby clothes NOW - You’ll thank me later
Once baby arrives, you won’t have time to dig through piles of clothes just to find that perfect onesie. I remember leaving the tags on a lot of outfits and who knew baby clothes had so many tiny tags and things to remove?
Make sure you do that before the baby is here, as well as washing everything with a gentle laundry detergent.
My best tip: sort baby’s clothes by size and season. You don’t need to go overboard, but organizing things now will make life so much easier.
Bonus: Toronto has tons of awesome baby consignment stores and local boutiques, so if you have clothes your little one outgrows, trade them in! You can find high-quality, gently used pieces that are perfect for the next phase. It’s also a great way to get some fresh styles without breaking the bank.

2. Preparing your nursery - keep it practical and cozy
The nursery doesn’t need to be a Pinterest-worthy masterpiece - although I know we all like to pin so many inspo photos. Sure, it’s fun to dream up a beautiful space, but let’s talk about functionality first.
You need to make sure you have space for the essentials - a crib, a changing table, and somewhere to sit and rock your baby during late-night feedings. You don’t need to invest in a million gadgets or elaborate decor to make the room feel special.
What’s going to matter most is having everything within reach and making the space feel cozy and comfortable for both of you.
If you want to get creative with a theme, go for it! But don’t let it stress you out. If you love neutral tones or just want a few cute pieces, go with what feels right to you.
Toronto has tons of amazing local shops and boutiques where you can find stylish and functional baby gear that’ll make the space feel like home - also don’t forget to check out second-hand options like marketplace.
And hey, if you don’t have a nursery all set up before the baby comes, no worries! It can be a work-in-progress. You can always adjust things once you know your little one’s personality (and schedule!).

3. Meal prep - your future self will thank you
Here’s a little secret: you’ll need food and lots of it. But the last thing you want to do while sleep-deprived is cook a gourmet meal.
The easiest solution? Meal prep. Just prepare simple, nutritious meals in advance, and freeze them for easy access later. Think veggie lasagna, chicken stew, or even breakfast burritos. These are easy to reheat and perfect for when you’re too tired to cook.
And if you don’t want to spend time prepping meals, Toronto has tons of local meal delivery services that cater to new moms, offering nutritious, ready-to-eat meals. You can even add meal delivery gift cards or slow-cooker services to your baby registry!
4. Create a sleep sanctuary for baby (and for yourself!)
Another thing I was not prepared for. Depending on your baby, you will get very limited sleep. But that doesn’t mean you can’t create an environment that helps everyone get the best rest possible.
Set up a peaceful space for baby to sleep - think soft lighting, calming decor, and a white noise machine. Downtown Toronto’s noise levels can get pretty loud, but a white noise machine can help drown out the hustle and bustle of city life.
For extra comfort, use blackout curtains to make sure your baby’s room is dark and cozy when it’s nap time or bedtime.
Also, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, there are local sleep consultants in Toronto who specialize in helping new parents (like you!) get better sleep during those early months.
Follow experts like TakingCaraBabies for advice on sleep routines, or check out local Toronto sleep coaches to get personalized help.
5. Set up the diaper station - it’s your new best friend
I was not prepared for the amount of diapers you go through in those first weeks. You will basically live at your diaper station. So, make sure it’s organized in a way that works for you.
Think clear bins, easy-to-reach shelves, and simple storage solutions for all the essentials - diapers, wipes, creams, and those little accessories you won’t know you needed until the baby arrives (nasal aspirator, saline spray, etc)
And pro tip: stash diapers in multiple places around the house. One in the living room, one in your bedroom, one in the nursery. You don’t want to be running back and forth during an emergency diaper change. Trust me on this one!
Preparing for a baby can feel overwhelming, but just know you’ve got this. Keep it simple, trust your instincts, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. You’re doing amazing, mama!
Love,
Jess
